Tremendous Trinity, clueless Catalans and Wakefield Trinity v Catalans Dragons talking points

Wakefield Trinity celebrate a team try

Wakefield Trinity and Catalans Dragons faced off on Saturday late afternoon as both sides looked to make a move towards the top six.

Trinity secured a 44-6 victory over the Dragons in a fantastic performance from the home side.

With key forwards back for both teams, it was expected to be a battle of the packs, but it was Wakefield’s spine that really controlled the game.

Here were the main talking points for the match between Wakefield Trinity and Catalans Dragons.

Wakefield Trinity v Catalans Dragons talking points

Tremendous Trinity

Whilst it wasn’t a flawless performance, Wakefield were close to their best, especially in the first half. There were standout performances across the park, including player of the match Josh Rourke, both halfbacks Max Jowitt and Mason Lino and returning front-rower Mike McMeeken. Trinity have gone through the season building slowly, despite some injuries, but they look a good shout for a top-six spot that they’ve now secured.

Clueless Catalans

That was one of Catalans worst performances this season, and there’s already been quite a few. With 40% of the possession and completing at just 54%, they offered next to nothing going forwards. Their backs didn’t seem to carry the ball enough, the forwards weren’t making a great deal of metres either. The Dragons halfbacks had the perfect opportunity to get a foothold on the game in the second half when Wakefield had a dip, but neither Luke Keary nor Cesar Rouge were particularly visible.

Wakefield building off the pitch

Another game where Wakefield’s home crowd was close to capacity, with 8,625 supporters packed into the DIY Kitchens Stadium. That was their biggest crowd since 2013. Whilst they’re a team going places on the pitch, they’re definitely building off the pitch too. Usually, a home game against Catalans is a club’s smallest crowd of the season due to the lack of away support. However, Wakefield’s £5 ticket incentive got bums on seats and created a great atmosphere.

Another ill-disciplined game from the Dragons

It was yet another match where the Dragons discipline was another talking point. Sam Tomkins was sin-binned just before half-time for a professional foul, and they conceded far too many penalties once again. If they want to make some simple adjustments to get any more points, keeping hold of the ball and minimising the penalty count would be a good place to start. Back to basics is what they need right now.
