Whilst the battle for the Super League play-offs heats up with just 10 more rounds to go, so does the talk for the end-of-season awards.
Last season saw Wigan Warriors second rower Junior Nsemba take home the award, the first Warriors player to win the trophy since Oliver Gildart back in 2017.
In a season that’s seen plenty of players put in some career-best performances, there is a crop of youngsters waiting in the wings and taking their opportunities in the first team when called upon.
We’ve selected our top five contenders who could be taking home the trophy of Young Player of the Year as things stand, but there’s still time for several players to stake their claim across Super League too.
The top 5 contenders for Super League Young Player of the Year
Harry Robertson – St Helens
If there’s one player in the league who’s really taken to Super League as a youngster in 2025, it’s Harry Robertson. It’s already a bit of a fairytale season for the 19-year-old, signing a contract to keep him at Saints until the end of the 2028 season, as well as a call-up to Shaun Wane’s England training squad just last week.
Despite missing five games between April and May due to a quad injury, he’s really made the centre spot his own, despite playing alongside two different wingers so far this season in Jon Bennison and Kyle Feldt. With fourteen games under his belt in 2025, along with ten tries, it’s been a dream second season for the St Helens youngster, playing out of position to his preferred fullback or halfback role.
George Flanagan Jr – Huddersfield Giants
His side might not be having the best season, in terms of league position and injuries, but George Flanagan Jr has been a highlight for Giants fans in 2025. Starting in the halves, he’s moved into the fullback role in his last seven games, and is combining well with Tui Lolohea, especially.
Having only made his Super League debut back in round two, he’s only missed two games so far as Huddersfield start to gain some momentum. He’s also become the Giants’ go-to goalkicker, currently running at just below an 80% success rate.
Morgan Gannon – Leeds Rhinos
It’s a shame that Morgan Gannon’s season is currently halted due to an ankle injury, as he was one of Leeds’ most consistent performers before that. His season isn’t over, though, and he’s expected to be back around round 20.
He had played in all but one game prior to his injury in round 15, and his form has been noticed in the southern hemisphere too. He heads to New Zealand Warriors in the NRL on a three-year deal, and will be hoping to make his England debut in the Ashes series before that too.
Lewis Martin – Hull FC
It’s perhaps a name that doesn’t always grab the headlines, but Lewis Martin looks set to finish the season as Hull FC’s top try-scorer for the second season in a row. Prior to the clash with Wakefield on Thursday, he sat on 12, with prop Herman Ese’ese his next Black and White competition on seven. He’s also joint fourth in the league’s try-scoring charts, too.
Along with his try-scoring ability, in 2025, he’s worked on his edge defending too, and carried the ball early in sets to help out his forward pack. Martin seems to be steadily improving week on week, and with Harvey Barron on the other wing, Hull look set to have two of the best young wingers in the league for some time.
Junior Nsemba – Wigan Warriors
There’s a strong possibility that reigning Young Player of the Year, Junior Nsemba, will retain the trophy and would become only the third player to do so, following Sam Tomkins and Jack Welsby. Whilst 2025 might not have been as impactful as his 2024 season, he’s still an ever-present in the Wigan Warriors’ second row.
He also sits second in Super League for tackle busts, with 100 so far this season, sitting only behind Leeds Rhinos fullback Lachie Miller on 104. With five tries and five try assists along with nearly 400 tackles, he’s an asset in both the Warriors’ attack and defence. He also seems to be one of the few players actively promoting the league out and about, making him valuable marketing material.
