Seven Leigh Leopards players facing uncertain futures in 2025 as things stand

Now we’re at the halfway point of the 2025 season, it’s time to look at which players could be heading out the door, with a look at the Leigh Leopards contract situation.

With a trio of halfbacks currently out of contract for next season, Leigh have some decisions to make in the spine.

There’s also been lots of talk surrounding a Super League veteran winger and second-rower as the Leopards may be looking to bring in some younger players.

Currently, there are seven Leigh Leopards players with deals expiring at the end of the 2025 season, so let’s take a closer look at who they are.

Seven Leigh Leopards players out of contract this season

Josh Charnley

Charnley might be second on Super League’s all-time tryscorers chart, and just eleven tries away from leader Ryan Hall, but he’s fallen down the pecking order at Leigh. He’s only featured seven times for the Leopards in 2025, and it’s been rumoured that his time at the club is coming to an end. We’re sure many Super League clubs will be on high alert if he doesn’t extend at Leigh.

Jack Hughes

Only missing one Super League game this season, Hughes has been one of Leigh’s most consistent forwards since his arrival in 2023. However, he’s been moving between the second row starting spot to starting on the bench frequently in 2025. At 33, he’s coming towards the end of his career, but could be worth keeping on for at least another year.

Lachlan Lam

If there’s one player that Leigh needs to keep hold of with everything they have, it’s Lam. All of their best attacking play goes through him, and arguably, he’d be the biggest miss on this list. Every player is replaceable, but Lam offers that spark that so many players don’t have. There are always going to be rumours swirling around a high-quality player, from a move to Hull KR to back to the NRL, but the Leopards should do what they can to keep him. Speaking on Thursday about his son’s future, Adrian Lam declared, ‘he won’t be going anywhere’, in a statement which gave a strong indication about where his future lies.

Ben McNamara

A player who has really found his feet in recent weeks alongside childhood friend Lam, McNamara has more than stepped up into the stand-off role in Gareth O’Brien’s absence. It looks like he’s settled in at Leigh, and he could well be offered a new contract at the club at some point this season and get the rewards for some decent form of late.

Gareth O’Brien

At 33, O’Brien has been in and out of the Leopards’ side this season, due to multiple head knocks. He’s already had three, and because of that, has had to see a specialist to check for any serious problems. He’s had his fair share of injuries over his career, but speaking in April, the head coach outlines his desire to see O’Brien stay.

Kavan Rothwell

The 22-year-old has been on loan at Barrow Raiders this season, making eight appearances so far in the front row or at loose forward. He’s yet to make his Leigh debut, and in his second year at the club, he might have to wait some time longer. He could sign with a Championship club and have a very successful career there, or bide his time for a Super League spot.

Nathan Wilde

Making two appearances off the bench in rounds nine and 10 of Super League this season, Wilde could be another making the move to the Championship. At 25, he’s enjoyed spells at Newcastle Thunder, Rochdale Hornets, Doncaster and Widnes Vikings, along with six games at Featherstone Rovers this season. It seems unlikely that he’ll stay at Leigh and is someone who could stay at Featherstone if they want to sign him.
