One of the 2025 Super League Young Player of the Year nominees has signed a new long-term deal with their club in a move that has left them ‘over the moon’.
Whilst St Helens’ Harry Robertson lifted the prestigious trophy last year, there were four very strong candidates nominated with Hull FC’s Lewis Martin, Wigan Warriors’ Junior Nsemba and Huddersfield Giants’ George Flanagan all getting a nod.
It is the latter who has now signed a new deal with Huddersfield Giants tying their full-back down to a new deal until the end of the 2029 season.
Flanagan had previously been signed until the end of the 2027 season, however, this new deal offers him more security and also safeguards Huddersfield from any rival clubs swooping for the talented youngster.
To date, the 21-year-old has 23 Super League appearances and ten tries, all of which came in 2025 as the full-back had a breakout season under Luke Robinson’s coaching.
Huddersfield Giants sign George Flanagan to long-term deal
Flanagan will have to compete with Niall Evalds for a starting spot in 2026 with the ex-Hull KR man now back fit and firing, showcasing his talents in the recent pre-season game against York Knights.
Despite Evalds’ presence in the squad, head coach Luke Robinson has labelled Flanagan as ‘someone we really want to build a side around’.
Speaking on the 21-year-old’s new deal, he said: “He’s got stern competition still to get a regular spot, but what I love about George is he is a rugby lad, grown up in a rugby family, he’s obsessed with the game, and obsessed with getting better.
“George is really buying into the things that he needs to really work on, his fitness, his strength has improved throughout pre-season. So, I think we’re only going to see a better George Flanagan in 2026. That’s good for him. He’s staying at the Giants and I’m really, really excited about it!”
Flanagan noted some of those new focuses as he spoke about the new deal: “I’m over the moon to re-sign again. I’m glad to get it over the line now and focus on what could be a big year for the Giants.
“I’ve been focusing on getting more physicality, like Robbo has wanted me to do, get my fitness right and you know, you’re only good as you last year and I want to kick on and be better than I was last year.
“Obviously, I’ve got to taste the Super League last year, so to play again this year would be massive! I just want to kick on and take the Giants to somewhere they haven’t been for a while, up in that top section, that’s where all the boys want to be. We’ve been working hard and we’ve had a great preseason so far, so now I’m looking forward to it.”
