Super League Team of the Week as eight teams represented including three Wigan men

The Super League Team of the Week is in for Round 21, after another thrilling weekend goes into the competition’s history books.

The action started with what was a poor but much-needed win for Jim Lenihan’s Huddersfield Giants, as they downed Hull FC 22-16 to narrow the gap at the bottom of the table.

Wins came for Leeds Rhinos, Hull KR and Wigan Warriors on Friday night, as they battled Toulouse Olympique, Bradford Bulls and Leigh Leopards respectively.

There were three games on Saturday too, with Warrington Wolves putting Castleford Tigers to the sword, York Knights winning a thriller against St Helens and Wakefield Trinity toppling Catalans Dragons in Perpigan.

With the action now complete, players from eight different clubs are represented, with Wigan leading the way with three inclusions.

Super League Round 21 Team of the Week

Full-back: Jai Field (Wigan Warriors)

Whilst his stats weren’t as impressive as some of his other performances this season, Field had a moment of individual brilliance as he raced to get a quick tap, capitalising on an unset Leigh defence and running the length of the field to score just before half-time.

That try changed the momentum of the game in the Warriors’ favour, and was the first of four tries that Wigan scored, all of which came off the back of Leigh errors.

Wingers: Matty Ashton (Warrington Wolves) and Joe Burgess (Hull KR)

England World Cup hopeful Ashton had his best Warrington game of the season, as he scored two tries and assisted another in a Man of the Match-winning performance against the Tigers.

Racking up 206 metres from 20 carries, the speedster will be hoping to carry that form into the remainder of the season, as he looks to return to the national set-up.

Another man with an eye on that plane to Australia is Burgess, who has been clinical in the past two weeks.

After scoring the match-winner against Hull FC, the former Wigan and Salford man scored another two this week, and made 199m from 17 carries.

Centres: Connor Wrench (Huddersfield Giants) and Zach Eckersley (Wigan Warriors)

The Huddersfield man was crucial to the second-half fightback over FC, as he scored a try and assisted Lewis Jagger’s effort to give his side the lead.

Eckersley put on another great display, and is another man who is making a huge claim to be added to the World Cup squad.

Scoring a try and assisting another, he also ran for just under 140m from 13 carries

Halves: Harry Robertson (St Helens) and Jake Connor (Leeds Rhinos)

One Saints player who certainly didn’t deserve to be on the losing side on Saturday was Harry Robertson, who produced a sensational performance that very nearly won the game for the Red Vee.

Scoring and assisting in the same game, he made a huge five clean breaks, made 10 tackle busts and made 211 metres with ball-in-hand. The move to the halves has seen the youngster thrive, with the most experienced players in the side needing to step up alongside him.

Rhinos star and current Man of Steel showed why he’s top of this year’s rankings, with the playmaker scoring 22 of Leeds’ 46 points against Toulouse, eight of which came from a try double.

Props: Luke Thompson (Wigan Warriors) and Toafofoa Sipley (Warrington Wolves)

Leigh boss Adrian Lam believes that Joe Ofahengaue is the best prop in Super League, but his opposite number on Friday night, Thompson, put his claim in for that title with an impressive display.

Making 48 tackles with no misses, the former St Helens and Canterbury man made 119 metres from 15 carries.

Warrington’s overseas forward Sipley scored his second try in as many games against Castleford, and carried for 145 metres as he proved to be too hard for the Tigers to handle.

Hooker: Jez Litten (Hull KR)

Fans will go back and forth as to who England’s best nine is, with Litten and Brad O’Neill being comfortably the two best as it stands. This week, it was Litten who stood out more, with a try, an assist and 117 metres against the Bulls.

Back Row: Isaiah Vagana (Wakefield Trinity) and Harry Rushton (Huddersfield Giants)

Two-try scorer Vagana is included again, as he continues to show why he earned a huge long-term deal at the club.

Rushton was arguably the best player in Super League this weekend, as the Giants skipper assisted Chris Patolo’s try, made 44 tackles and ran for an incredible 257 metres against Hull FC.

Loose forward: Jordan Thompson (York Knights)

He may have only made 16 tackles and run for 43 metres, but veteran Thompson arguably won his side the match with an incredible second-half try-saver that kept Saints out as they looked for points in their attempt to comeback.
