Super League clubs ran riot in the first set of third round Challenge Cup games with a number of records falling on Friday night.
Just five games were played on Friday night but it didn’t stop the combined score of the Super League sides being almost 350, with the combined score across the fixtures being a remarkable 348-14.
It’s a reminder that there simply is no perfect Challenge Cup format as it’s a similar gulf in class to that of round two where the community clubs were generally all blown out when facing Championship opposition. The aggregate score in those games was 966-76, or approximately 60-5, whereas Friday night’s games averaged a scoreline of around 69-3.
Hull KR were the biggest winners but that was perhaps to be expected given the fact that they played community club Lock Lane, with the holders winning 104-0, a club record.
Rhyse Martin set a goal-kicking record as Jack Broadbent and debutant Harvey Horne both scored hat-tricks with the Robins still without their England contingent of Joe Burgess, Mikey Lewis and Jez Litten, as well as Peta Hiku also missing out.

Super League clubs cruise past Championship opponents
That game was played in East Hull but the Robins’ West Hull counterparts also won to nil, beating Salford RLFC 60-0 with Davy Litten scoring a hat-trick from full-back.
Unfortunately for FC, they lost second-rower Jed Cartwright to a HIA inside 15 seconds meaning he will now miss the Super League season opener against Bradford Bulls.
No other Super League side won to nil but St Helens came close on their trip to Cumbria as they won 98-2 against Workington, despite going 2-0 down.
Paul Rowley’s side put on a show in front of a crowd of 4,129 with Tristan Sailor, Kyle Feldt and Jack Welsby all scoring hat-tricks as Jackson Hastings scored a whopping 38 points (two tries and 15 conversions).
Like Hull FC, Saints also picked up a knock with Matty Lees appearing to suffer an ankle injury that fans will hope wasn’t as bad as it looked.
Huddersfield were involved in one of the earlier kick-offs, beating West Yorkshire side Hunslet 52-6 with half-back Tui Lolohea scoring two and new signings Chris Patolo and Asher O’Donnell also crossing the line.
Elsewhere in South Yorkshire, Warrington Wolves progressed but with the smallest scoreline of the night as they won 34-6 against Craig Lingard’s side.
The big story there was the fact that 16-year-old Tommy Rhodes became the club’s youngest every try-scorer at 16 years and 281 days, with the teen deployed at full-back late in the game.
Capable of playing throughout the spine and also at centre, Rhodes could be one of the next young talents to make an impact at Warrington.
