The referee appointments for Round 21 of the Betfred Super League have been confirmed, with key matches including Leigh Leopards vs Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves vs Wigan Warriors.
Who is in charge of this week’s Super League games?
The round will kick off on Thursday night with one of the ties of the week, as Brad Arthur’s Rhinos travel to Leigh, who are on a four-match winning run. Leeds have a fourteen day turnaround compared to the Leopards’ six, will that play a factor? Jack Smith will be the man in the middle, with Chris Kendall as video referee.
Friday night sees a Las Vegas and Magic Weekend rematch as Warrington Wolves host Wigan Warriors. Kendall will oversee this one, as he did in Vegas, with Smith pairing with him again as video referee.
Wakefield Trinity host St Helens also on Friday night. Trinity will be in high spirits after their last-minute drop-goal victory over Leeds a fortnight ago, whilst Saints hammered the Tigers last week. Liam Moore will take up the whistle, with Tom Grant the video ref.
The first game on Saturday sees Hull KR host Castleford Tigers. Willie Peters’ men have beaten the Tigers’ in the last six meetings as they look to remain at the top of the table. Grant will turn to on-field referee, with Liam Rush as video ref.
Saturday evening sees Huddersfield Giants host Catalans Dragons. Aaron Moore will be in charge of this fixture, with Marcus Griffiths as video ref.
Sunday afternoon plays host to Hull FC and Salford Red Devils in the final game of the round. Salford have lost Chris Hill and Chris Hankinson this week in what is another blow for the club. Rush will take the whistle in this one with Liam Moore the video referee.

Is there anywhere that ranks the referees by analysis’ of their performance, look for any particular patterns? For instance, if a try is scored what percentage of tries will referee A go to the video ref compared to Referee B?
What percentage of decisions does any given referee have overturned? Say referee A raises 10 issues per match, over 27 matches, that’s 270 decisions, I’d suggest if less than 13 are overturned they don’t bother , they just get on with it. If they get between 14 and 50 decisions wrong ,then they only raise them for really contentious decisions in agreed key matches, like the Tom Davies try at Wembley. Above that, they get remedial training and an eye test, or simply give their whistle to their guide dog. These figures could be analysed ver the close season, then revised instructions given for next season, with constant updates on a rolling 30 game basis. It’s only basic data analysis, not rocket science., I happen to know as my first job was in both fields! If referees are mostly correct why bother with the video ref?
f team X is playing team Y what is the likely result based on their previous performance in said game based on all matches, matches versus that opponent, or other relevant factors. The players and coaches are under minute scrutiny, everything is tracked, analysed, scrutinised, subjected to punditry, but the referees…echoing silence. You can bet the bookmakers undertake these analyses as someone will try to bet on it, there should be no reason whybsuch information cannot be in the public domain. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
