Teacher set to become newest Super League referee with match confirmed

The RFL have confirmed that Super League will have a referee debut in Round 16, making them just the 53rd person to take charge of a game in the competition’s history.

Whilst the full set of referee appointments for Round 16 have not been confirmed, the official for the clash between Catalans Dragons and Huddersfield Giants on Saturday evening in Perpignan has been.

That’s because it’s been announced that Cameron Worsley will make his Super League debut, becoming the 53rd person to referee a Super League match since the competition was launched in 1996.

It’s a huge achievement for the 25-year-old, who has taken charge of over 100 matches in the Championship during his officiating career so far.

Having officiated at the highest level in the tier below, he now takes a step into Super League with RFL Head of Match Officials Phil Bentham, a former Super League referee himself, congratulating him on the appointment in the RFL’s statement.

Cameron Worsley to become 53rd Super League referee

Bentham labelled it a ‘pleasure’ to appoint Cameron, noting his progression over the last seven seasons. Whilst Worsley will be refereeing a Super League game for the first time, he has been a touch judge in the competition before.

The 25-year-old works as a PE teacher at Airedale Academy but has racked up plenty of experience officiating, having been on the list of Grade One officials since 2019.

Bentham explained: “It’s a pleasure to congratulate Cameron on this appointment, which is richly deserved after the consistent progress he has made as a member of our Grade One list of match officials over the last seven seasons.

“He has refereed more than 100 matches in the Betfred Championship, and also gained considerable Super League experience as a touch judge – with recent appointments including referee for a semi final in the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup, and touch judge for one of the Betfred Challenge Cup semi finals.

“His appointment underlines the opportunities within our pathway for Grade One officials outside the full-time squad who perform consistently in Betfred Championship and other matches – reflecting the commitment they show and the sacrifices they make to achieve such a high level of performance.”

The remainder of the matches in Round 15 will see the referees confirmed tomorrow (Tuesday).
