Super League playmaker Danny Richardson has secured an immediate and permanent move away from York Knights with the former St Helens, Castleford Tigers, and Hull KR man signing a deal in the Championship.
The Widnes-born half-back has signed with his hometown club on a deal until the end of the season with the Vikings announcing his signing via social media.
A former Super League Dream Team member, Richardson has plenty of pedigree but he’s not found as much game time at York as he would have hoped and that’s seen him seek a move away to the Vikings, who are performing well in the Championship.
Releasing a statement, the Championship club confirmed: “Widnes Vikings have signed hometown half-back Danny Richardson from York on a deal until the end of the season.”

Danny Richardson signs with Widnes Vikings after Super League exit
Richardson made the move to York late in the 2025 season as he left Hull KR whilst injured in the hope that he could help the Knights late on in their campaign.
He’s played just three times for York so far in 2026 with the last of those appearances coming in the narrow defeat to Wigan Warriors in mid-March.
Speaking on his decision to join Widnes, Richardson said: “Returning home is something I have always wanted to do during my career and I finally get the chance to do that now. I can’t wait to get back home and get in front of the Widnes fans and rip in.
“The club and the town have got a lot of history when it comes to rugby league. I remember growing up and going watching the games and the whole town bouncing, I know what it means to play for the club, I know what the fans demand and what the town demands, and I can’t wait to go and do everybody proud.”
Head coach Allan Coleman was delighted with the signing, stating: “It was vital that we replaced Leon [Hayes], because I think having a half of Super League quality improved us and brought a real factor to the opposition.
“I identified Danny as a player not playing currently and did some enquiring. We had a conversation and it became known it could be a possibility and the board backed me to get it done.”
The move for Richardson also brings key competition for places at the Vikings who currently sit fifth and have the 1895 Cup Final against London to look forward to, though Richardson will not be eligible to play in that game.
