Super League injury round-up as Hull FC, St Helens and Bradford Bulls hit hardest in Rivals Round

Whilst action-packed, Super League Rivals Round came at a heavy injury cost to a number of teams, both victors and losers and we’ve picked out all the major injury news from across the seven games.

Arguably the biggest winners, at least in terms of the scale of victory, were St Helens as they launched an astonishing comeback to defeat bitter rivals Wigan Warriors, however, that came at a cost.

Forward Agnatius Paasi left the field inside five minutes with a suspected hamstring issue that will need to be assessed but will likely lead to a significant lay-off. Later in the game, Shane Wright failed a HIA meaning he will be out of this week’s Challenge Cup clash against Catalans Dragons.

Wigan also saw one of their forwards go down with Junior Nsemba limping from the field with an apparent ankle injury that the club will likely offer an update on as the week progresses.

The other big derby of the day saw Hull FC lose both the game but also their star man with John Asiata needing to be helped from the field with a hamstring issue that John Cartwright described as a ‘pretty bad’ one.

Unfortunately for Hull FC, Asiata was not the only injury sustained as Jake Arthur (calf) didn’t play whilst Joe Batchelor (hamstring) and Arthur Romano (ankle) also limped off within the 80 minutes at Craven Park.

Super League injury review from Rivals Round

Friday’s other game saw the return of the big West Yorkshire derby between Bradford Bulls and Leeds Rhinos with the Bulls, like Hull FC, not only suffering defeat but substantial injuries.

Jayden Nikorima did not play due to a hamstring injury that could rule him out for six to eight weeks, whilst the Bulls also lost Waqa Blake (MCL), Phoenix Steinwede (ankle) and Leon Ruan (HIA). Ruan will be back for round eight of Super League but Blake and Steinwede could be longer-term.

Leigh Leopards’ injury woes continued as Frankie Halton failed a HIA with the second-rower looking very wobbly on his feet after a late tackle, whilst Saturday afternoon’s other afternoon kick-off saw more injury blows.

Will Dagger is the latest full-back out with a HIA set to stop him from playing his former club Hull KR. Josh Griffin could also miss that with a back spasm but the severity is to be determined.

As for the Giants, both Connor Wrench and Tanguy Zenon came off late on but more as a precaution and even so, Huddersfield are not in action this week.

Alrix Da Costa didn’t play for Catalans as a result of a calf injury in the week whilst Josh Allen failed a HIA in the game. Sunday’s final game thankfully saw no injuries sustained, however, Caius Faatili and Jazz Tevaga were omitted on a precautionary basis with Daryl Powell having admitted on Thursday when speaking to media that there had been some knocks in training.
