Super League injury news amid Wigan Warriors blow and Hull FC, St Helens and Hull KR concerns

Super League

Round 21 came at a price for some with a number of Super League players picking up injuries.

Hull KR continue to lead the way at the top of the Super League table after beating Castleford Tigers on Saturday afternoon and they’ll fancy their chances of being able to extend their lead at the top to six points on Friday night when they take on Wigan Warriors at the Brick Community Stadium.

Wigan edged out Warrington Wolves on Friday night to ensure they still have a chance of winning the league and they now sit three points ahead of Leigh Leopards, who slipped up against Leeds Rhinos on home soil.

Leigh stay in third, while St Helens and Leeds Rhinos are a point back in fourth and fifth respectively with their hopes of finishing inside the top two still alive for now.

Hull FC moved back into the top six with their win over Salford Red Devils, while Wakefield Trinity’s loss to Saints means they are seventh at present.

Huddersfield Giants were the other winners of the weekend as they claimed their fifth win of the year by beating Catalans Dragons.

Here, we take a look at the injury concerns to emerge over the round of fixtures.

Super League injuries after round 21

Wigan know they will be without one of their star men when Hull KR come to town on Friday after seeing Junior Nsemba fail a HIA at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. That rules him out of this week’s do or die clash, with Peet having to shuffle his pack line up. Fortunately, Sam Walters is fit again and he can play in the back-row in Nsemba’s absence.

KR boss Willie Peters will be checking on a few injuries too, but they aren’t thought to be too serious. Mikey Lewis required an injection in his shoulder at half-time on Saturday after taking a knock, but managed to get to the full-time whistle without too much issue.

Jez Litten was subbed off late with a groin issue, while Jared Waerea-Hargreaves wasn’t included at all due to a shoulder issue. Rovers could certainly use his experience but it remains to be seen if he’ll play any part on Friday night.

St Helens man Curtis Sironen failed a HIA ruling him out of Sunday’s clash with Huddersfield Giants, while Jake Wingfield left Belle Vue on crutches with a lower leg injury.

Castleford Tigers’ Fletcher Rooney sat out of the clash with KR on Saturday after pulling out of the club’s final training session leading into the game.

Hull FC skipper Aidan Sezer missed out this weekend, too, after picking up a shoulder injury in training. John Cartwright told the press on Sunday that he half-back has had scans and wouldn’t need surgery but he stopped short of confirming when the veteran would return.

Ed Chamberlain looks set to miss a few more weeks, though, after picking up a rib cartilage issue in the win over Salford Red Devils.
