Round nine of Super League is in the books and we’re starting to get a strong idea of who will be competing at the top end of the table later this year. Hull KR reaffirmed their first place ranking as they came from behind to see off Leeds Rhinos at Headingley.
It was a match full of controversy with both sides receiving red cards, but KR were the victors with Mikey Lewis’ late try proving to be the difference.
Wigan Warriors kept up the pace on them, though, as they swept Hull FC aside with relative ease on Sunday afternoon. Matt Peet’s side won 36-12 at the MKM Stadium and remain just two points behind the Robins.
Leigh Leopards are third after cruising through the challenge of Salford Red Devils, while St Helens remain in fifth, despite losing to Warrington Wolves on Thursday night. The Saints are locked on points with Leeds Rhinos, Warrington and Catalans Dragons, with the latter picking up a golden point win over Wakefield Trinity on Saturday night.
Castleford Tigers were the other winners of round nine as they claimed their second victory of the season and piled the misery on Huddersfield Giants, who remain without a point after nine games.
However, the round came with a number of injury concerns, with clubs set to check on a host of players this week ahead of Magic Weekend.
Super League round nine injury concerns
Warrington Wolves will be without both of their first choice half-backs this weekend when they take on Wigan Warriors in Newcastle with Marc Sneyd joining George Williams in the treatment room. Sneyd suffered a suspected fractured eye socket in the first half of the win over St Helens and will be looking at a lengthy period on the sidelines.
Matty Ashton will also miss the game this week after failing a HIA in the second half of the contest. Sam Lisone and Kelepi Tanginoa both suffered head knocks on Friday night as Leeds Rhinos took on Hull KR, but Ryan Hall was the most notable injury to come from that game, with the Leeds winger limping out of the action with an ankle injury.
Castleford Tigers loanee Hugo Salabio sustained a head knock, too, while Catalans Dragons winger Tommy Makinson also took a blow to the head. Wakefield Trinity head coach Daryl Powell confirmed his side had picked up two injuries in the south of France with Caleb Hamlin-Uele suffering an arm problem, while Renouf Atoni was ruled out of next week’s clash with Castleford due to a calf issue.
Ryan Brierley missed Salford’s clash with Leigh due to an ear infection and the Red Devils also saw Tiaki Chan pick up a hamstring problem in the game. The Leopards’ Keanan Brand injured his calf in the warm up.
Hull’s star man Herman Ese’ese left the MKM Stadium field with a sternum problem but head coach John Cartwright sounded optimistic that he will be ready for next week when speaking after the game.
