Super League chairman’s generous gesture following vandalism at local club

Supr League chairman on community club break-in

Super League chairman Ken Davy has offered to match any donations on the Giants’ next match day following the vandalism at a local rugby league club.

Lindley Swifts, based in the Huddersfield area, discovered their storage units at their ground had been broken into and their contents left broken, with many items set on fire on their pitch and grounds.

This has made the Fartown pavilion pitch at the club completely unplayable for their junior teams for both training and matches, and the club are seeking help from the rugby league community.

The Huddersfield Giants have stepped in to help repair the damage, with a bucket collection set up for their next Super League match against Wigan Warriors this weekend in Dewsbury.

Super League chairman Davy has declared that he will “personally match pound for pound every donation received in the buckets up to a level of £10,000” in a very generous offer to help out the amateur club.

The donations will help to repair the ground and pitch, along with purchasing new equipment that was left broken.

In a statement on the Huddersfield Giants website, Davy said: “Like all Rugby League supporters, I was appalled to hear of the shocking vandalism that occurred over the weekend to the Lindley Swifts Rugby League club.  Such disgraceful behaviour and wanton vandalism simply cannot be tolerated, and I sincerely hope the culprits are brought to justice.

“Our amateur rugby league clubs provide tremendous support to young people throughout their communities, teaching the qualities of teamwork and individual and collective responsibility.  I can only imagine how disheartened the dedicated team of volunteers that run the club, and their players and supporters, must be feeling.

“I believe we all need to do what we can to help get the Swifts back up and running.”

If there’s one thing that rugby league fans do well, it’s rallying around their local community club when they’re in need of help.

There is also a Go Fund Me page for anyone wanting to help the Swifts out following the damage to their ground.
