Super League disciplinary as two players banned and four others charged

The Super League disciplinary verdict after Round 19 of the competition has been confirmed with a number of players charged and two players banned.

Many expected Castleford Tigers captain Alex Mellor to potentially be facing a ban after his high tackle on Josh Thewlis which helped prevent a try, however, the second-rower is only handed a Grade B charge.

That carries three points and takes him to four for the season meaning he is only fined.

That’s not the case for another Castleford player though who has been handed a one-match ban, despite only landing a Grade A charge.

Jeremiah Simbiken was handed a Grade A charge of late contact on the passer but his prior penalty points have ensured he is handed a one-match ban. That’s an example of the new Super League disciplinary system whereby points add up and can cause issues down the line.

Wakefield’s Isaiah Vagana has found that out too as his Grade C charge worth five penalty points wouldn’t be enough for a ban on it’s own, however, it is added to his previous three points meaning he is handed a one-match suspension.

Joe Stimson is the third Castleford player charged but his Grade A charge is his first, meaning he escapes with no further action.

Catalans’ Franck Maria is fined after his Grade B charge for head contact whilst Hull FC’s Matty Laidlaw is also fined for a Grade B charge of dangerous contact against Wigan Warriors.
