Super League disciplinary as two banned, 14 charged and Mikey Lewis verdict reached

The first Super League disciplinary verdict of the season is in with plenty happening in round one of the competition and that’s led to a total of 14 charges with two players being banned.

With seven games per round in 2026 due to the expanded Super League, it’s only natural that more charges arise and it’s often been the case that the Match Review Panel are a lot stricter at the start of the season.

The referees were certainly strict on field regarding ruck speed but also sin bins with several players sent for ten minutes, including Hull KR star Mikey Lewis. His trip on Liam Harris proved the turning point in Rovers’ loss to York Knights but it also led to fears that the yellow card could result in a disciplinary charge.

With Brisbane Broncos and the World Club Challenge on the horizon, there were understandable fears but Hull KR fans can now breathe a sigh of relief with Lewis only handed a Grade C charge, worth five points.

Given Lewis had no points on his record, it means he fell one penalty point shy of a ban so the 2024 Man of Steel will be able to line up against Brisbane on Thursday night.

Super League disciplinary sees two players banned

Mikey Lewis wasn’t the only big name to land himself a disciplinary charge though with St Helens’ star signing Jackson Hastings also copping himself a Grade C charge worth five points after his late shot on Cai Taylor-Wray. Similar to Lewis, Hastings was shocked to be sent to the bin but his offence was equally as obvious and the NRL recruit now finds himself on the disciplinary rap sheet.

Among the 14 charges, two players were banned with Hull FC prop Ligi Sao landing himself a two-match ban for making dangerous contact that also resulted in injury. The Grade D charges carries 12 points but the fact Sao caused injury adds three more points, meaning he landed a 15-point charge and a two-match ban.

Catalans captain Benjamin Garcia was the other man to be banned with his Grade A charge resulting in a one-match ban on account of his previous penalty points accrued for when he punched Elliot Minchella in 2025.

Minchella himself was one of four Hull KR players, including Mikey Lewis, to be charged with the loose forward handed a Grade B for Head Contaxt, whilst Jai Whitbread and Pete Hiku were handed Grade A charges for late contacts on the passer and kicker respectively.

Wigan Warriors centre Adam Keighran earned a Grade B charge worth three points for the offence that saw him sin-binned against Castleford Tigers with the remainder of the charges all being for Grade A offences. They can all be seen in the table below.

It’s worth noting that Aidan Sezer’s shot on Joe Mellor, which was penalised at the time, received no further charge despite Kurt Haggerty’s belief it was worthy of a sin bin.
