Leigh Leopards have been handed a major blow ahead of their upcoming clash against Hull KR after veteran Jack Hughes was banned for three matches by the disciplinary panel after round 14 of Super League.
The Match Review Panel have met and handed out a total of ten charges after the latest round of Super League action but it is only Hughes who has been banned, with the Leigh man handed a Grade E charge of making unnecessary contact with a player who is either injured or could be injured.
That offence has resulted in the same disciplinary charge on numerous occasions this year, in both Super League and the Challenge Cup with Wigan’s Harry Smith and Castleford’s Semi Valemei both landing three-match bans, whilst Leeds Rhinos’ Lachie Miller will return from his three-match ban for the same offence this coming week.
Losing Hughes is a major blow with his ban coming just days after his head coach Adrian Lam waxed lyrical about his ability to cover numerous positions, even admitting that contract talks had been opened to re-sign the veteran to a new deal.
Hughes’ charge was one of three in Leigh’s win over Bradford with the Bulls’ Riley Dean handed a Grade C charge, worth five points, for striking. Hughes’ teammate Edwin Ipape also picked up a Grade B charge for dangerous contact.
Elsewhere, three charges arose from the game between St Helens and Warrington Wolves with the ‘on report’ Joe Shorrocks avoiding a charge for his shot on James Bentley, though he did receive a Grade A charge for late contact on the passer in a separate incident.
Amir Bourouh also evaded any charge despite being placed on report in Hull FC’s win over Huddersfield Giants.
