Super League club set for major stadium upgrade to take capacity beyond 11,000

One Super League club are set to complete a major upgrade on their stadium, which would expand the capacity well over 11,000.

Wakefield Trinity, who have only been back in Super League for one completed season since their relegation, have already earned a Grade A rating under the IMG scores but they’re set to develop their ground even further, as reported by the BBC.

A planning statement to increase the capacity at the DIY Kitchens Stadium to 11,484 have been given the green light with Wakefield to set about upgrades that will extend the terracing, demolish a roof and then install a replacement structure that extends the North Stand.

Atop that, a number of other buildings will be demolished as the club look to make upgrades to their facilities, a continuation of the improvement projects that have taken place since owner Matt Ellis took charge of the club.

Under Ellis, the East Stand has been redeveloped with the capacity increased whilst a number of other improvements were made so that the club could adhere to the IMG quota for facilities.

Planning statements revealing the upgrades was submitted by the club’s registered Companies House business the Spirit of 1873 Ltd with those submissions made to Wakefield Council.

No objections were made with plenty in favour of the development work with Trinity outlining their plans in the statement.

“Wakefield Trinity has been an incredibly important part of the community and its history.

“The proposed development deepens that sense of place and identity further.

“Clearly the proposal will enable the professional aspects of the club to continue at the highest level and to be competitive there.”

Upgrading the stadium to a capacity of over 11,000 would ensure that Wakefield are one of the majority of Super League clubs to have a ground that can hold 10,000 or more fans.

How the work would go ahead in and around the season is yet to be seen but upgrades did take place throughout the 2024 season whilst the club were in the Championship, suggesting it can be done mid-season.
