Super League club Catalans Dragons have signed a player their coach refers to as a ‘special talent’ to a new extended deal.
That’s how Joel Tomkins described 20-year-old outside back Clement Martin and the club view Martin’s talents as so special that they have extended his contract by another year, meaning he is tied down until the end of the 2027 season.
Catalans signed Martin in August of 2024, recruiting him from fellow French side Lezignan. At that point, they signed him to a two-and-a-half-year deal, meaning his contract would expire at the end of next season.
However, rival clubs can begin negotiations with players who are off-contract at the end of the season once the new pre-season starts so Catalans have pre-empted that by extending Martin for a further year, meaning no other team can speak to him until at least December of 2026.
As well as that, they also have offered the 20-year-old the security to play his best rugby, some of which we saw in 2025.
Catalans Dragons retain young Super League talent
Martin made four Super League appearances and scored a try against Huddersfield Giants but big things are expected from the outside back, who can play on the wing or in the centres.
He’ll have some great players to learn from among the outside backs in 2026 with Catalans retaining Nick Cotric and Tommy Makinson whilst signing two NRL talents in Charley Staines and Solomona Faatape .
Joel Tomkins spoke about the new deal, stating: “It is great news for the club that Clément has agreed to an extension of his contract with the Dragons. Clément is a special talent and one of a number of exciting young players in the 2026 squad who we want to develop into top level Super League players over the next couple of seasons.
“It is an exciting time for the club with Clément and our younger players improving their understanding of the game all the time and pushing for places in the team next season.”
The 20-year-old added: “I’m really happy to extend my contract for another two years. I’d like to thank the club and the coaching staff for their trust for the seasons ahead. I still have a lot to learn, but I’ll give 200%.”
