Super League side bolster forward pack as former Newcastle Knights man joins club

Super League side Toulouse Olympique have added another mid-season signing to their squad, after picking up an Australian prop.

Following the arrival of Ethan Quai-Ward, who made his debut for the club last time out against Wakefield, the French side have looked into the market once again, and have now brought in John Toleafoa from Albi.

Able to play at both prop and back-row, the 27-year-old came through the ranks at Newcastle Knights, however he never managed to make an NRL appearance.

Instead, he was a regular in the reserve grade competition, and between 2020 and 2024 he played 39 times for the Knights in the New South Wales Cup.

In 2024, he made the switch to Europe and joined French side Saints-Gaudens in the French Elite One competition. A good showing there earned him a move to Champions Albi, where he featured most recently.

In the past two years, he has scored seven tries in 30 matches, and has earned his Super League opportunity under Sylvain Houles.

Whilst he is new to Super League himself, he follows in the same mould as some of his former teammates. Krystian Mapapalangi, Cooper Jenkins and David Armstrong were all relatively unknown players before they made the switch to the northern hemisphere, where they are now proving to be some of the most effective invididuals in the competition.
