Super League attendance sees Wakefield Trinity break 12-year record as Wigan Warriors and Hull FC pass 10,000

The first half of Round 20 in Super League has seen three very impressive attendances, including one sell-out crowd.

Super League saw just three games played this past weekend with games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with Round 20 of the competition split over two weekends to allow teams to have a rest.

It’s the first rest that both Hull KR and Warrington Wolves have had given the fact both teams made it to the Challenge Cup Final, however, they’ll be in action this coming week having not played this past weekend.

Those who played this weekend will rest next and they’ll need it given the intensity of the three matches with the first being the most dramatic of the lot.

Wakefield Trinity managed to beat Leeds Rhinos 15-14 with Mason Lino’s late drop goal proving the difference as Daryl Powell’s side proved their play-off credentials at a packed-out DIY Kitchens Stadium. That crowd was a record, although was actually the lowest of the three Super League attendances this past weekend.

A total of 9.252 watched that epic in Wakefield, a crowd figure that is the highest for Wakefield since 2013 which showcases the incredible transformation that is happening in West Yorkshire at the moment.

The sell-out crowd were rewarded as well and Man of the Match Mason Lino credited them with the win given the fine margin, a margin that ensured Wakefield moved to sixth on the Super League ladder.

It was expected that would be a temporary placing given that Hull FC, the team Trinity had leapfrogged, played lowly Huddersfield Giants on Saturday, however, the Black and Whites slipped to a second defeat to Luke Robinson’s side this year.

That was despite a Lewis Martin hat-trick as the Giants won 30-14 in front of a crowd of 10,6645 at the MKM Stadium.

The other game this week saw Wigan Warriors host Catalans Dragons on Friday night. Before the match, it was confirmed that the sides will face off in Paris next year, a game that could see a monster attendance.

As for Friday, almost 15,000 turned out to watch Wigan win 28-18 in a performance where Les Dracs showed grit but ultimately didn’t have enough.

Wakefield Trinity 15-14 Leeds Rhinos – 9,252
