Super League attendance see records fall as huge crowds recorded

Round One of Super League has drawn some massive crowds with two attendance records being broken on a strong weekend for the sport.

Attendance figures always boom at the start of the year with fans keen to get back to supporting their team after the long off-season.

Showcasing that boom was the fact that six of the seven games in round one saw crowds that were larger than the club’s 2026 average attendance.

The only game that didn’t surpass the home team’s 2025 home attendance was Catalans Dragons meeting with Huddersfield Giants on Friday, though there are a number of reasons for that.

Whilst Perpignan is a wonderful destination for fans, few target it in February with Catalans’ attendances far higher in summer as a result of UK-based fans taking advantage of the sun. Moreover, the game was played at 5:00 pm local time on a Friday night, meaning plenty of fans won’t have been able to attend on account of work.

That said, a crowd of 7,252 still turned up to watch as Joel Tomkins’ side won 26-10.

Super League opening night saw a massive shock but also a massive crowd at the LNER Community Stadium with the venue sold-out. No official attendance has been revealed but the capacity of the ground is 8,500 and it was advertised as a sell-out crowd.

Another record was broken on Friday night as 15,064 watched Warrington Wolves beat St Helens with that figure marking the biggest home crowd for Warrington in 52 years.

The largest crowd of the round came a day later when Hull FC recorded their largest attendance for a non-derby home opener in Super League since 2005 as 16,663 watched their win over Bradford Bulls.

Over 9,500 watched Leigh beat Leeds, whilst crowds of over 8,000 watched Wakefield’s loss to Toulouse and Wigan’s win over Castleford.
