‘Standard now set’ for Leigh Leopards as Adrian Lam hails signing’s best game and shares positive injury update

Leigh Leopards head coach picked out NRL signing Adam Cook for high praise as his side defeated Catalans Dragons on the road in Super League.

Having lost at home to Catalans earlier in the season, Leigh got their own back as they won 33-18 in what Adrian Lam agreed was the best game by Adam Cook in his Leopards’ career.

Cook nailed a crucial 40/20 that helped set up Joe Ofahengaue’s go-ahead try whilst he also kicked 15 points, including a last minute drop goal to rubber-stamp the victory.

Asked if the former Canberra Raiders man had played his best game yet for the club, Adrian Lam agreed: “Without a doubt. He’s been under pressure really from the start of the season, and didn’t have that consistency but we’ve had conversations together, and I’m backing him as long as it takes.

“I always say it takes 10 to 12 weeks for it, so it’s bang on the money there at that moment and I’, grateful that he played his best game tonight. He was all over that, and hopefully that’s a real positive sign for him and the team moving forward. That’s the standard now set.”

Perhaps more important than Cook’s best game was the fact Leigh have now won three on the spin but also four from five, something Lam hailed as ‘important’ as the Leopards boss credited his forward pack.

“It’s always difficult to come here and win, and we’ve had a bit of luck over the last three years coming here.We backed ourselves, had a bit of a simple plan, and I thought that our forward pack today were outstanding.”

Leigh Leopards boss calls for consistency after latest win

Despite their difficult start, that win now takes Leigh to just two points outside the top six and Lam has now called for more of the same going forward after the hiatus for the Challenge Cup.

“It’s about that consistency,” he said, adding: “There were times in that game that it was so frustrating to watch, and everything that made the game frustrating, we were in control of that, we played a part in that, so there’s a lot of lessons to learn there.

“We could have been a lot more clinical, I felt, but having said that, I think we’re only two points out of the six today, and probably still remain close to that. It’s about making sure we take each week at a time, don’t get ahead of ourselves.”

On injuries, he offered a positive update: “We’ve been through a really difficult time with so many injuries. There’s still a couple to come back, though. We’re not playing next week but after that, I think Bailey Hodgson and Keanan Brand are back in the picture.

“All of a sudden there’ll be a bit of a headache there. I’m not sure what to do with that yet, but a good headache to have.”

He also paid huge credit to the club’s travelling support, adding: “We love them. They’re the heartbeat of our club. They’ve travelled here in the last three years I think there’s around 3,500, 4,000 of them that travel. I think it’s the biggest travelling crowd for this particular away game.”
