A Championship club have confirmed an immediate short-term loan move for one of St Helens’ rising talents.
Young half-back Will Roberts is set to leave St Helens on an initial two-week loan to link up with Championship side Widnes Vikings.
Roberts, who turned 20 in February, was handed a new deal at the end of last year as the Red Vee renewed the contracts of four players including Jon Bennison and Jake Burns.
He is still without a senior appearance for St Helens but spent time on loan in the Championship in 2023 and 2024, and in League One with Swinton Lions this year.
Roberts will now make the step back up to the Championship when he links up with Allan Coleman’s side ahead of this weekend’s game against league leaders Toulouse Olympique.

Roberts has been named to the 21-man squad for St Helens this season but is still yet to feature and with George Whitby having earned a starting berth, it would seem opportunities in the Saints’ first team will be hard to come by.
As such, a move to a Championship side with play-off ambitions makes sense and it’s a move that will also see him link up with his brother Max Roberts, who has typically played in the centres for Widnes.
A statement from Widnes confirmed the deal, reading: “Widnes Vikings are pleased to announce the signing of Will Roberts on an initial two-week loan from St Helens.
“The promising halfback is the younger brother of Vikings player Max Roberts and has spent time on loan for Swinton this season, scoring two tries in three appearances.”
Head Coach Allan Coleman said: “He’s a player I’ve watched since he was 6/7 years old. I’ve coached him before, and obviously, he’s Max’s brother.
“He’s a very talented player, superb kicking game, and a real run threat. He scores a lot of tries as a half, which is something that will be very important for us.
“He’s going to come in and lift us, and I think the fans will see what he’s got to offer this weekend.”
