St Helens’ spine injuries continue as Jonny Lomax heads to hospital after five minutes

After Jack Welsby’s round one injury thrust St Helens spine into changes, they’ve now lost replacement Jonny Lomax to injury inside five minutes in their clash with Leigh Leopards.

Welsby suffered a dislocated shoulder in the round one loss to Warrington Wolves with the England full-back sustaining the injury as he scored his try.

He’s since been ruled out for up to 16 weeks with the full-back having an operation in the week, however, Saints have now suffered another spine injury with Jonny Lomax suffering a reported dislocated wrist.

Paul Rowley opted to move half-back Tristan Sailor to full-back and bring veteran Jonny Lomax into the halves alongside Jackson Hastings, however, Lomax left the pitch due to injury inside five minutes.

The former captain appeared to be holding his arm and was seen utilising his shirt as a sling, just as Jack Welsby did in round one, and St Helens will be desperately hoping that the result is not similar.

Lomax was chasing back Leigh’s Andy Badrock when he sustained the injury in the process of making the tackle, with the half left behind holding his arm as Leigh went on to score through Josh Charnley.

Sky Sports’ Stuart Pyke later provided an update, confirming it was wrist and not shoulder, though it was not good news for St Helens.

Pyke explained: “We understand that Jonny Lomax has dislocated his wrist and is now on his way to hospital.”

Saints did hit back through Daryl Clark with plenty of responsibility on his shoulders now given that Lomax was replaced by young centre Harry Robertson, who reverted to full-back with Tristan Sailor then moving back to his round one position in the halves.

With Lomax likely facing an extended period on the sideliens, Paul Rowley will likely have to turn to young half George Whitby in future weeks.
