Out of favour St Helens back, Jon Bennison, is set to play in the Championship for the next fortnight, after agreeing a deal that will see him go out on loan to Widnes Vikings.
Bennison has made 12 appearances in 2025, however has not featured since May, when the Saints were defeated 17-4 at Magic Weekend by Leeds Rhinos.
Saints’ reserves is where he has played his most recent matches, the last of which consisted of him scoring a try and slotting over seven conversions.
The 22-year-old was part of the squad that won Saints’ last Grand Final, in 2022, where he appeared on the wing. This is the position he has spent most of his first team career, despite coming through the ranks as a full back.
He will now ply his trade in the second tier, and with Widnes short on options in the backs, the move makes sense for both parties.

Vikings head coach Allan Coleman discussed the move, saying he is delighted to get someone in of Bennison’s experience.
“Rhys Williams is going to be unavailable for a bit due to a personal engagement that we found out about at the start of the season, so we always planned to bring in some cover if needed,” said Coleman, speaking to the Vikings’ website.
He continued: “We’ve been building a good relationship with Saints, and the big thing for us is that Jon is a Widnes lad. He’s been part of this club as a young kid, and I know for a fact he wants to play for Widnes, which is massive for us.”
He added: “He brings a lot of Super League experience and will add a lot of quality for us out on the wing. So we’d like to thank St Helens for letting us have him.”
Widnes currently sit ninth in the Championship, six points off the playoffs. The Vikings are winless in their last three, but upcoming matches against Sheffield and Batley, which Bennison will be eligible for, could be a start of a late surge up the table as the season comes to a close.
