St Helens star recruit David Klemmer is hoping for instant success with his new club, as he joins Super League for the first time.
The former World Cup winner has arrived at the Red Vee on a two-year deal, and is one of the biggest names to have made the move from Australia this off-season.
Klemmer, who has 260 NRL outings under his belt, is looking to use his wealth of experience to help guide some of Saints’ younger players this year, whilst also achieving glory along the way.
And, ahead of the new Super League season, he gave an interview to SaintsTV at the club’s media day earlier this week, where he laid out his motivations for joining the nine-time Grand Final winners.
“There’s something inside that still drives me to get up at training,” he exclaimed. “It’s freezing, but I want to try and win things, that’s just how I am.
Giving a nod to some of the club’s next generation, the former Kangaroo has been impressed with some of the young blood within the Saints first team, particularly those in the forward pack.
Revealing further motivations, he added: “The young blokes we’ve got coming through at the moment, and meeting them. George Delaney, Noah Stephens, Jake Wingfield, and Matty Whitley as well. He’s a player as well.
“It gives you a bit of a spark to go up against these blokes and train with them and help them, as well.
“They’re at the start of their footy careers, and I just want to do my best to be a good leader and professional and help them out.
St Helens prop previews “hostile” season opener
After making his unofficial debut in Matty Lees’ testimonial game over Castleford Tigers, Klemmer will get his taste of Super League action on Friday 13 February as the club travel to Warrington Wolves to begin the year.
The club have reported that less than 250 tickets remain as part of their allocation at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, meaning that the occasion will be bouncing as the competition returns.
Commenting on the thought of playing in that tie, Klemmer revealed:
“Everyone keeps telling me the atmosphere is going to be wild. It’s going to be pretty hostile, and an experience.
“I’m excited. They’re a quality side and it’s a good time of the year for us to go out there and test ourselves and get our season going.”
