St Helens man shares first words after ACL injury in emotional social media post

St Helens forward Jake Wingfield has spoken for the first time since the news broke that he would miss the rest of the season through injury.

Wingfield had to leave the field early in Saints’ Challenge Cup win over Catalans Dragons, and was pictured on crutches post-match.

Initial thoughts from head coach Paul Rowley revealed that the versatile middle could have suffered an ACL injury, and those fears became true when the club put out a statement on Monday afternoon.

The 24-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of this season, featured in five games for the Red Vee this year and played in a number of positions including hooker and back row.

Wingfield, alongside Lewis Murphy who has dislocated his elbow, are the two latest men to suffer injuries at Saints this year, as their injury luck hasn’t let up in the first two months of the campaign.

Having suffered such a heartbreaking and lengthy injury, Wingfield has taken to social media and released a message sharing his first thoughts, whilst also thanking the people around him who have helped him over the past few days.

Speaking via his own Instagram account, he said: “Absolutely gutted and in disbelief to say I’ve torn my ACL and will miss the next 9 months.

“Not how I saw things panning out this season after a tough few years dealing with similar circumstances and it’s a tough one to take.

“Long road of recovery ahead, but the success I’ve had and some of the best days of my life at this club and this team shows me there is light at the end of the tunnel and I’ll be back 100%

“Appreciate all the support and kind words from friends, family, teammates and fans, it doesn’t go unnoticed ❤️”

How unfortunate, but these things happen. Don’t know where he will be playing in 2027, but wherever he is, they will be in possession of a great asset. When you can play multiple positions, you should always be wanted.
