Konrad Hurrell makes loan switch as St Helens provide fitness update on centre

St Helens

St Helens’ overseas centre Konrad Hurrell has made yet another loan move with the club providing an update on his return to fitness.

Approaching the halfway stage of the Super League season and the Tongan is still yet to don the Red Vee in the competition this year, despite Saints having had plenty of injury issues in their backline.

Hurrell is another who has been on that injury list with the powerhouse centre recovering from the neck injury that ended his campaign last year.

There had been some concerns that Hurrell would potentially even have to call time but he was re-signed by St Helens for another year, yet hasn’t played for them in Super League.

He’s spent time on dual registration with Halifax Panthers and more recently played for League One outfit Swinton Lions but he’s now set to go back to the Championship as he bids to regain full match fitness.

St Helens send Konrad Hurrell out on loan

St Helens have confirmed Hurrell will join Bradford Bulls on an initial two-week loan with the club explaining the move as one which will see him ‘look to continue his return to full match fitness’.

Hurrell is in line to play this weekend when the Bulls host recent Wembley winners York Knights, who beat Featherstone in golden point to secure their first 1895 Cup win.

Bradford head coach Brian Noble hailed the loan deal for Hurrell as one that shows the club’s ambitions, with the Tongan back to “come in and make a difference”.

Noble said: “It’s very exciting, clearly Konrad has played at a high level of Rugby League for a number of years. He is a Tongan international, he has played in the World All Stars and has made headlines wherever he has been, so for him to choose us is fantastic.

“He ticks those boxes [being a box office player] so I think the Bradford fans will be pleased. He has been out injured for a few weeks, but he is back fully fit and good to go.

“It shows the ambition of the board and our true ambitions for this year. We’ve seen a couple of players leave and we have picked up some injuries again, so it was important we filled the space with the right person and I don’t believe in bringing in anyone who isn’t as good or better than what we have got.”

Whilst Hurrell is out on loan, St Helens will have their own backline decisions to make following confirmation of the injuries to Jack Welsby and Lewis Murphy.
