St Helens ‘fearing the worst’ as forward suffers cruel injury a week after standout performance

St Helens are ‘fearing the worst’ for forward Jake Wingfield after his injury in the Challenge Cup quarter-final win over Catalans Dragons.

Wingfield, 24, has also shown plenty of promise but he’s had an injury-hit few years that’s seen him fail to play 20 or more games since his breakout campaign in 2022.

His performance in the Good Friday derby was heralded by many, including pundit Jon Wilkin who hailed the forward’s versatility and added: “I don’t think we’ve seen the best of this kid… if he gets a run in a position in the team, he can do some things.”

Unfortunately, it seems that Wingfield will not get that run in the team with Paul Rowley confirming that St Helens are ‘fearing the worst’, that being an ACL injury which could be season-ending if torn.

Offering an injury update post-match and shared by SaintsTV, Rowley said: “Wingy is kind of fearing the worst there with a potential ACL and Murph (Lewis Murphy) I think was a dislocated elbow. Until you get it scanned, you don’t know the damage.”

What St Helens’ boss had said on injured forward

Making Wingfield’s injury all the more cruel is the fact it came after what Paul Rowley had described as his season-best performance last week.

Asked by Serious About Rugby League earlier in the week for his assessment on the 24-year-old’s derby day showing and recent form, Rowley was full of praise.

“He’s fantastic. I thought he had his best game of the season,” the head coach said of Wingfield’s derby day efforts.

“Obviously, he had some injury concerns at the beginning, but he’s come back in, been a valuable member, and some of his efforts at the weekend really set the tone for the performance.

“He was recognised by all his teammates, and you’re quite right, he’s done a great job.”

Scans will hopefully bring back a more positive diagnosis than an ACL with Leigh’s Bailey Hodgson in a similar situation earlier this year, only to discover an MCL injury instead.
