St Helens confirm season-ending injury for Jake Wingfield as contract clause spells uncertain future

St Helens have provided an injury update to confirm that forward Jake Wingfield will undergo surgery for a season-ending injury with his future at the club now uncertain beyond this year.

The injury is devastating news for the 24-year-old who had strung together a series of impressive performances before being helped from the field in Friday night’s Challenge Cup win over Catalans Dragons.

Speaking after the game, Paul Rowley confirmed that St Helens were ‘fearing the worst’ regarding a possible ACL rupture and that has now been confirmed following scans.

It means the forward will now be booked in for surgery and then begin the lengthy rehab journey, which will ultimately mean his season is over and possibly his time at St Helens as the second and third year of his contract are dependent on appearances.

A statement from St Helens announced the injury: “St.Helens RFC can regrettably confirm that Jake Wingfield has sadly suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and will require surgery.”

Jake Wingfield’s St Helens career in doubt

It’s the latest in a string of serious injuries for Wingfield who only signed a new contract last October, however, his future remains in doubt.

St Helens confirmed a three-year deal but seasons 2027 and 2028 would be ‘triggered dependent upon the number of appearances he makes in the subsequent years’.

Of course, Wingfield will not play another game this season and to date he has only played five games in 2026, which almost certainly would not be enough to trigger a new deal. St Helens may well honour his contract beyond this year but that is to be seen.

Confirming the news of his injury, St Helens said: “Following scans over the weekend, the news was sadly confirmed that it was an ACL rupture, and it unfortunately means that Jake will play no further part in the Saints’ 2026 season.

“Surgery will be booked in for Jake as soon as possible, and then his rehabilitation will begin, with the Club lending our full support to him at this tough time.”

Head coach Paul Rowley said: “Firstly, on behalf of everyone at the Club, our thoughts are with Jake at this time. I know we all get around him and lend him and his family our full support.

“For such a professional, hard-working young man, it’s gutting news, and we know he deserves so much better than this news. He’s a fantastic lad who we love, and we’ll make sure our medical staff and more will support him.”
