St Helens have confirmed that Mike Rush has stepped down after a 27-year association with the club.
Rush, who was been Chief Executive Officer for the last 13 years, has stepped down with the club releasing a brief statement following by quotes from Rush and the club’s chairman Eamonn McManus.
Announcing the news, St Helens said: “St Helens RFC announces that its CEO, Mike Rush, has stepped down after 27 years at the Club, the last 13 of which he has served as CEO.
“The search for a new CEO will begin immediately. In the interim, Club Chairman Eamonn McManus will act as CEO with support as necessary from the Club’s Board of Directors.”
Rush’s exit comes just days after club legend Jon Wilkin delivered a piercing rant towards the club live on Sky Sports’ coverage of St Helens’ defeat to Warrington Wolves, with Wilkin explaining that change was needed at the club.
There is no confirmation that Wilkin’s comments had any impact on today’s announcement with Serious About Rugby League understanding that Mike Rush’s departure was expected anyway.

What St Helens have said about Mike Rush’s exit
As well as that initial statement that confirmed Rush would leave and that the search for a new CEO would commence, there were also quotes from Eamonn McManus and Rush himself.
Explaining his decision, Mike Rush said: “After 27 incredible years at this club, I have made the decision to step down as Chief Executive Officer.
“This has been the hardest decision I have ever taken. The Club has been such a huge part of my life for nearly three decades, but I believe now is the right time to step aside.”
Rush ensured to thank all who had worked at the club, both past and present, with thanks also paid to Eamonn McManus and the supporters.
Concluding his statement, Rush said: “Life in professional sport is 24/7. It is relentless, demanding and all-consuming. After 27 years, I am both emotionally and physically exhausted. I have sacrificed a great deal over that period, as has my family, and I feel it is time to put them and myself first as I step away.
“Finally, to my amazing family and friends, thank you for 27 years of unwavering support. None of this would have been possible without you. You have carried me through the highs and the challenges, and I will always be grateful.”
Eamonn McManus added: “Mike has been with our club throughout his entire professional career and has devoted his life to it.
“He was previously our Head of Youth, Head of Performance, Assistant Coach, Head Coach and General Manager before taking over as CEO 13 years ago. During that period, the Saints have experienced unparalleled success, and Mike has played a big part in it at every level.
“He is first and foremost a passionate Saints fan, and that drive and devotion has been evident.
“He has effectively devoted his life to the Saints, and we will always owe him a debt of gratitude for his efforts and sacrifices.
“Mike and his family have our very best wishes for the future, and he will always receive the warmest of welcomes at the Saints.”
