St Helens confirm devastating Jack Welsby injury with second star out for eight weeks

St Helens fullback Jack Welsby pre-game

St Helens have confirmed a major double injury blow with Jack Welsby and Lewis Murphy both set for extended spells on the sidelines.

Welsby limped off before half-time against Hull KR with a knee injury which Saints boss Paul Wellens confirmed the club would have scans on.

The results of those scans have now revealed the extent of the injury and it is not good news for St Helens with Welsby set to miss the next 16 weeks.

That would mean that the full-back is set to miss the remainder of the regular season and with no guarantee that St Helens make the play-offs given their form in 2025, it could even mean that his domestic season is over.

If that were the case, he’d then head into the Ashes series against Australia having not played a game for almost five months which would be far from ideal preparation for Shaun Wane’s side.

St Helens star Jack Welsby to miss rest of the Super League regular season

As for St Helens and Paul Wellens, it’s a major blow with Welsby being one of the standout players in Super League this season. So far, he’s registered 20 try contributions with his 14 assists second only to Lachlan Lam.

Not only will Saints miss Welsby’s creativity over the coming months but they’ll also be without winger Lewis Murphy who left the game against Hull KR with a quad injury.

That’s now been confirmed to be an eight-week injury in another cruel blow for St Helens. Murphy missed part of the season earlier on, suffering an injury in the Round One win over Salford before returning in Round Seven.

A statement from St Helens confirmed: “Welsby has suffered a knee injury that requires surgery, which took place today, Tuesday, 3rd June 2025. Unfortunately, this means that the Saints and England fullback is expected to be unavailable for match selection for 16 weeks.

“Murphy in the act of trying to score in the corner during last Friday night’s match, suffered an injury to his quad, which is expected to make him unavailable to play for around eight weeks.”

Head Coach Paul Wellens commented on the news and said: “Obviously, it is disappointing news for Jack and Lewis, and the Club will, as we always do, give them our full support in their injury recovery.

“I am certain Jack & Lewis will give their all in their rehab to get back on the field and contribute once again to our team when they return.”

Dinosaur Wane will still pick him even if he has to paly with crutches. Either that or he’ll ask Tomkins to fill in. Totally lacking in any vision.
