St Helens have confirmed that versatile spine star Tristan Sailor has signed a new three-year deal with the club in a move that may well create more questions than it answers.
Sailor was off-contract at the end of 2026 but the club have backed the Australian by signing him until the end of the 2029 season, something that will clearly spark questions over where his long-term position is.
Handed the six shirt, Sailor has looked far more comfortable at full-back, a position he played during the period when Jack Welsby was injured. Since Welsby’s return, Saints haven’t been certain of their spine and their recent run of losses isn’t seen as a coincidence by many.
Sailor even started the recent loss to Warrington Wolves on the wing but eventually moved into the halves after the injury to Jonny Lomax and Saints have paid tribute to their star man’s versatility within the club statement announcing his deal.
That tribute reads: “Whilst his preference is to play anywhere in the spine, Sailor is versatile and can play in multiple positions. As such, he has put the team first to play wherever has been needed for the Saints. His positive attitude and mentality have also seen him move into the senior leadership group of the team, where his influence and presence continue to grow.”

Tristan Sailor signs three-year deal at St Helens
Since signing ahead of the 2025 season, Sailor has scored 28 tries with the spine star playing an impressive 50 consecutive games since debuting.
That resilience and his adaptability, as well as his undoubted skill that can break a game open highlight why he has been re-signed to such a long deal.
Speaking on his new contract, Sailor said: “I came here for an opportunity, and I’ve absolutely loved my time here. I’m glad to be staying on and continuing to play alongside some of the boys I’ve been with over the past two years.
“Coming over to such an historic club, you had always heard about St Helens, I certainly did from Jammer [James Graham]. And I saw coming in last year, the boys who carry values like Jonny Lomax, who is one of the toughest players I’ve played with, and you understand what the Club is all about.”
Sailor also set out silverware as what’s next, stating: “The biggest thing for me is helping bring trophies back to this club. That’s what this club, the fanbase and the community expect because St Helens has always been a successful club.
“We’ve gone through some adversity over the past couple of years with inconsistent performances and changes within the squad, but now it’s about adapting and evolving with the game and the players we have.”
Head coach Paul Rowley spoke on the deal, adding: “Tristan extending his stay with the Saints is great news for the Club. Since joining, he has been outstanding in his performances and is a really valuable team member.
“He’s a great lad, and I am very happy that we get the pleasure of continuing to work alongside him going forward.”
