St Helens announce latest contract extension as overseas forward commits

St Helens have been on a contract signing spree over the past seven days, having already announced new deals for four of their current players.

Now, a fifth player has put pen to paper on a new deal, with experienced back rower Curtis Sironen remaining at The BrewDog Stadium for another two seasons.

Sironen, who joined the club in 2022, helped Saints side to win the Grand Final in his maiden year, before appearing in the 2023 World Club Challenge victory over Penrith Panthers.

The former Wests Tigers and Manly Sea Eagles forward has made 90 appearances in the Red Vee, and has scored 15 tries.

The 32-year-old joins Daryl Clark, Leon Cowen, Jake Wingfield and Matt Whitley in signing new deals at the club, as new head coach Paul Rowley begins to put his imprint on the team, deciding who he wants to be part of his squad for 2026.

“Reignited my love for rugby” – St Helens star grateful for new contract

Sironen spoke to the Saints club website about his new deal, and said he is proud to pull on the Red Vee. After a year full of ups and downs, he wants the next two seasons to be more like his maiden Super League campaign.

He said: “Being a Saint reignited my love for rugby league again, and being here I’ve met great people, made lifelong friends, and even started my family.

“I am over the moon to still be part of this great club. We want to get back to winning ways. I also want to help the younger boys coming through and leave my mark on my career here.”

It’s not just trophies that Sironen wants to tick off this coming year, with the Australian having a more personal goal in mind.

“I want to get to 100 games for the Club as soon as I can,” he said. “Hopefully, a strong pre-season will set me up for it, and I hit the ground running. I want to build on last year and find ways to keep getting better.”

Commenting on his new boss, Rowley, he said he hopes this season can be a turning point for the club, and looks forward to playing his coach’s renowned style of rugby.

“It’s always exciting when you have a new coach because it’s a fresh start for everyone. You have to go and earn your stripes again, and that’s a good thing,” said Sironen.

“Paul plays an attacking brand of rugby, and I’m looking forward to meeting and working with him, as well as seeing what new ideas he has, and how he wants me to go about my game.”
