Yet more change is to come at St Helens with the club announcing that assistant coach Eamon O’Carroll will leave at the end of the season in order to take up an opportunity in rugby union.
There has been plenty of change at St Helens in 2026 with long-serving CEO Mike Rush departing to be replaced by former RFL interim CEO Abi Ekoku, whilst recent reports from LoveRugbyLeague have suggested that one of the key academy coaches will depart.
The club have now announced that Eamon O’Carroll, who was appointed ahead of the 2025 season under then head coach Paul Wellens, will leave at the end of the year.
O’Carroll has previously worked as the head coach at Newcastle Thunder and Bradford Bulls, whilst also working in an assistant role under Steve McNamara at Catalans Dragons.
He now becomes the latest coach to take his talents to rugby union, with St Helens confirming he will join Welsh side Scarlets.

Eamon O’Carroll to leave St Helens
A brief statement announced the news, reading: “Assistant Coach Eamon O’Carroll will exit the Club at the end of the season to join Welsh rugby union side Scarlets.”
Only recently has Super League head coach Joel Tomkins taken his talents to rugby union with the Englishman stepping away from his role as head coach of Catalans in order to become the defence coach for Gloucester.
Some of the very best rugby union coaches hail from a rugby league background with former Man of Steel Andy Farrell arguably the best coach in the 15-man game at the moment, and having just signed a new deal to tie him to the Ireland head coach role until 2031.
