Sam Burgess provides update on long-term Warrington Wolves absentee as return game outlined

Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess has confirmed when we can expect to see star winger Matty Ashton back on the field.

Ashton has been out for 10 months with an ACL injury, has been biding his time as to make sure everything is fully healed before he steps back on to the pitch.

The England international was left out of the Wolves’ 21-man squad this week to face York Knights, despite some expecting this week to be the fixture he makes his return.

However, a spell of sickness has delayed his comeback, and fans of both Warrington and Super League will have to wait a little longer to see the try-scoring expert back in the action.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference this week, boss Burgess outlined which game the club are looking to bring the winger back, in what will be a huge boost to the side.

“Matty won’t be up for selection until Castleford [round five],” he confirmed.

“He was sick last week and lost a bit of weight, so we just decided we want to hit a few more markers with him and we’ll look at putting him in for selection in the Castleford week.

That game against the Tigers comes on Saturday 21 March, meaning that Ashton will miss the club’s Challenge Cup tie with Goole Vikings, and has just over two weeks to get himself fit for a place in the 17.

On his star winger, Burgess continued: ” He’s training fully, he’s been doing everything with us and has been for four weeks now.

“He missed two or three days last week, he was pretty ill, and with that he lost a bit of weight.

“With Matty, the longer we leave it the risk becomes less, so I guess the illness just gave me a chance to leave him for another two-three weeks, and take a bit of risk away from him.
