Sam Burgess was left ‘pretty disappointed’ after he watched his Warrington Wolves side lose to Wigan Warriors, with the defeat seeing Wire slip to fourth.
The 30-18 loss marks the club’s third loss in four and with games against Hull KR and Leigh Leopards coming up, it’s feasible that Warrington will not be in the top six within a fortnight, especially as they could drop to sixth this weekend if Hull KR and St Helens win.
Despite watching his side take a 12-0 lead after 12 minutes and a 12-6 lead into half time, hosts Wigan scored 24 points in the second half as they began to turn the screw and speaking post-match to Sky Sports, Burgess put that down to ill discipline.
“I probably agree,” he admitted when asked if he thought his side had moments where they could win the game.
“I think there was a couple of moments from both sides, in both halves.
“I really feel we let the game go, we didn’t have a great control of it, and then just poor discipline.
“If you give a champion side like Wigan too many opportunities they will make you pay, regardless of who’s in the side, so, yeah, I’m pretty disappointed.”
Warrington Wolves not focused on table despite drop to fourth
The loss sees Wigan jump ahead of them whilst Wakefield also move above them without playing due to points difference and when asked about the table, Burgess responded that his focus remains purely on the team.
“No, my eyes are firmly on who we are and what we’re doing,” he explained.
“We definitely turned up to the game today with a better attitude, no doubt about that, but our execution was off a little bit, and if we had our moment again in certain areas… there were a couple of big moments, big swings in momentum.
“Our energy was in the right place tonight, it was just execution off.”
Burgess did also offer some praise for teenager Ewan Irwin, who assisted the first try and scored the second, with the Wire head coach picking the playmaker out as his standout.
