Sam Burgess hails impact of Warrington Wolves key man after victory over Catalans Dragons

Sam Burgess hailed the impact of George Williams on Saturday night after his Warrington Wolves side’s 24-20 win over Catalans Dragons.

Williams scored a try and set up two more at the Stade Gilbert Brutus as Warrington claimed their third win on the spin and he left it late to deliver the decisive moment of the match. After seeing Denive Balmforth put Catalans ahead with around five minutes remaining, Williams responded by weaving through the Dragons line and kicking through for Josh Thewlis to touch down with three minutes left on the clock.

That capped a fine solo performance from the skipper in the south of France and Burgess could be heard singing his praises after the contest.

“It was an entertaining game, we really manged our plan well early in the first half and we got beat to the punch a bit in the second half,” Burgess told Sky Sports. “Some players probably weren’t up to scratch for us.

“Momentum can change pretty quickly but I’m proud of the team for fighting back in the last minutes and great play by George there to come up with the points and Thewlis with the composure to finish it.

“I thought he was excellent tonight, George, he controlled the game extremely well from the start. In the second half he didn’t really get too many opportunities and we took a couple of poor options in the second half and we weren’t willing to work hard enough. We paid the price for that but thankfully George got us home.”

Warrington Wolves on the right track

Warrington had their fair share of adversity and lost Marc Sneyd just under 30 minutes in to a thigh strain. Burgess admits that has hard to deal with, but he was pleased to see his side do enough to move within a point of the play-off pace.

“We just have to keep going forwards,” he added. “Our training has improved over the last three or four weeks and no doubt our performances have started to improve.

“Just a bit of inconsistency inside our game. We lost Sneyd again tonight after 30 minutes which is hard to recover from. We’re managing things on the run but we want to keep improving and build our game.”
