Sam Burgess gives George Williams’ Wembley verdict plus Warrington Wolves’ injury update

Warrington Wolves

Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess has given an injury update ahead of Wembley in the aftermath of his side’s win over Castleford Tigers.

Wire head to Wembley a week on Saturday and they’ll travel there on the back of a much-needed win with Warrington having lost their previous two matches, including one against Challenge Cup Final opponents Hull KR.

Castleford threatened a comeback but Warrington came away with a 34-24 win which has seen them move into eight in Super League as the Wolves leapfrogged Catalans Dragons. They still sit two points outside of the top six but attention will understandably now turn to Wembley.

Burgess didn’t rotate any players and actually recalled Paul Vaughan, Marc Sneyd and Sam Powell and the Wire coach was asked if he’d considered wrapping his players in cotton wool.

“Not really. I did change my rotations around a little bit in the game,” he confirmed, adding: “I tried to limit minutes for some of the boys. We are carrying bumps, but we felt that we needed to get the guys on the field and get some minutes in the legs.

“It’s been a disjointed start to the year with injury. We’ve struggled to keep any consistency with our team on the field, but we’re starting to get a few guys back now. We’re starting to keep them healthy, so hopefully that continues.”

Warrington Wolves set to welcome George Williams back for Wembley

Looking ahead to that game against Hull KR, Burgess explained that his side are going to enjoy the week as they look forward to go one step better than in 2024.

He explained: “We’ve got a really exciting week coming up. We’re going to really enjoy that and look forward to the whole atmosphere and the whole week and get a performance out on Saturday.”

The 2025 Challenge Cup Final pits the 2024 and 2023 runners-up against each other meaning one side will put that recent heartbreak behind them and the other will have it doubled, and on form Hull KR are the side to get the win.

However, Warrington look set to have their talismanic captain back with Burgess giving a short and sweet update on Wolves’ skipper George Williams.

“He’s on track. He’ll more than likely play,” was the assessment of Burgess, whilst he also moved to stop any concerns about Lachlan Fitzgibbon who had limped off following a knee injury in the first half.

“He’ll play next week yeah, with Lachy we just wanted to get some miles in his legs,” Burgess confirmed before joking: “I did tell him off at halftime. It was a bit daft what I did but he’ll be good. He’s great for our team. We really value what he brings.”
