Sam Burgess could be set for a longer stay at Warrington Wolves, their CEO Karl Fitzpatrick has revealed.
The former Bradford and South Sydney forward is one of two Super League coaches out of contract at the end of 2026, so Wire will be keen to secure their boss for 2027 as soon as possible.
Burgess joined Wire at the start of the 2024 season, and in his first campaign as a senior head coach guided them to a third place finish and a Challenge Cup Final apperance.
Losing 10-8 to Hull KR in the play-off semi-finals, the Wolves had a successful first 12 months under the England and NRL legend, despite not winning any silverware.
The 2025 campaign proved a lot more tough, with Warrington finishing outside the top six – however they did still make another Wembley appearance. Tom Davies’ late try gave KR the spoils that afternoon, and you could argue that a second straight Cup Final defeat was the reason the Wolves ended the season so badly.
Fast forward to this season though, and with Burgess in the final year of his initial contract he has got Wire flying again, and after nine rounds they currently sit two points off top spot, though they do have a game in hand.
With just months left on his contract, the Warrington higher-ups have a decision to make as to whether they stick or twist with Burgess going into 2027.
The club’s loss of Steve McNamara to Hull FC will no doubt have thrown a spanner into their plans, with McNamara “ear-marked” to be Burgess’ successor, whenever that may be.
Fitzpatrick was a guest on Sky Sports’ The Bench podcast earlier this week, and it was there he was asked the situtation regarding their head coach for next season.
He said: “Yeah, look, we’ve had some preliminary discussions already. Sam’s keen to stay.
“So, yeah, we’ll just have to watch this space with that one.”
