Off-contract head coach Sam Burgess has confirmed that he will stay at Warrington Wolves in 2027, though he’s yet to officially sign a new deal.
Burgess, like several of his players, is without a deal for next year but he’s confirmed in his pre-match media, shared by BBC Radio Merseyside, that he will be staying on to coach at the club.
The Englishman and his partner, Lucy, recently confirmed that they’re pregnant with their third child and opening his presser up, Burgess joked: “I really don’t want to talk about my personal life, I have enough of that to do in Australia.”
He’d then add: “Yeah, we’re excited. Obviously, we’ve loved raising our family in the north of England. My son was born here and our third child is going to be born here as well.”
That in itself let slip that Burgess will be in England next year when that third child is born, something he’d further make note of and admit confirms that he is staying on as head coach of Warrington Wolves.
He said: “I think out of all my brothers, they’re the only two of our children that are born where we were born so, that’s quite nice.
“It means I’m staying as well, doesn’t it? I’ve just basically told you that, haven’t I?”
Burgess had made clear his intention to sign a new deal in previous pressers and he referred back to that, noting that he would not go back on his verbal agreement with Wire owner Simon Moran.
“I told you six weeks ago, but I’ve just not signed a contract yet. Well, I’m not going to go back on my word that I agreed with Simon.”
It’s a huge boost for Warrington who will lose assistant coach Steve McNamara at the end of the season as he heads to take on the Hull FC head coach gig.
A new deal for Burgess will also take him into his fourth season coaching at the Wolves, with the former NRL star first taking the reigns in 2024.
