Salford RLFC have released a statement providing an update on their Challenge Cup third round fixture against Hull FC, explaining why the confirmed date has been selected.
After beating Hammersmith Hill Hoists in the second round, Salford booked a bumper tie with Hull FC which will be sure to draw a big crowd and offer a big financial boost to the phoenix club, however, it may not be as big as they had hoped.
The game will be played on Friday, 6th February as opposed to the club’s desired date of Saturday, 7th February and Salford have explained why.
That game will be one of several Challenge Cup third round ties to take place next Friday with Hull FC’s rivals Hull KR hosting community club Lock Lane. Warrington Wolves, Huddersfield Giants and St Helens will be the other three Super League clubs in action with all their games kicking off at 7:30pm, though Salford will host Hull FC at 8:00pm.
Salford RLFC explain Friday night tie with Hull FC
Sharing a statement to social media, club CEO Ryan Brierley explained why the game would be played on Friday and not their preference of Saturday with Sale Sharks’ home game on Sunday the key reason.
“We would like to provide an update regarding our Challenge Cup fixture against Hull FC,” the club posted on Instagram.
“Both clubs explored the possibility of staging the fixture on Saturday 7th, with a 5:30pm kick-off.”
That kick-off time was the preference as it allowed a longer turnaround for Salford and also allowed Hull FC fans the best chance to make it to the game, something the Championship club said they wanted to do in recognition of support shown to them by Hull FC and captain John Asiata when he led a prayer circle after last year’s clash between the side.
Brierley added: “Richie Myler was fully supportive of this approach and shared our ambition to maximise exposure and revenue for the club.”
In explaining why that wasn’t possible, he said: “Unfortunately, due to Sale’s fixture scheduled for Sunday 8 February, stadium regulations require a minimum 24-hour turnaround between matches to allow ground staff sufficient time to prepare the pitch. As a result, the Saturday option was not feasible.
“While we understand this may be disappointing for some, we are confident that Friday night will still provide a fantastic occasion.
“We look forward to welcoming Hull FC players, staff and supporters for what promises to be a great evening.
“Finally, we would like to wish Brad Fash the very best in his testimonial year and look forward to seeing everyone on Friday night.”
It’s a blow for fans of both clubs but particularly for Salford as a club given the larger expected attendance they would get for a Saturday game.
