Salford RFLC confirm heavily-changed Challenge Cup squad with Hull FC on horizon

Salford RLFC have named a much-changed squad for their second round Challenge Cup tie against Hammersmith Hills Hoists this Saturday, where a win will land them a tie against Super League side Hull FC.

The Championship side have only been able to name a 19-man squad compared to the 21-man squad that they named for their season opener against Oldham, the club’s first game since reforming as Salford RLFC.

Five of the players named in that first 21-man squad, who also went on to play in the 44-0 defeat to Oldham, won’t play this week due to varying reasons.

Homegrown player Charlie Glover suffered what head coach Mike Grady suspected to be a shoulder dislocation meaning he is ruled out through injury, whilst four of the players that Salford RLFC had loaned in have seemingly been recalled.

Leigh Leopards sent Will Brough, Oliver Polec, Ryan Brown and Nathan Wilde on loan to Salford, however, they’re not named for Saturday’s clash, likely because Leigh do not want the quartet to be cup-tied.

The Leopards will play North Wales Crusaders or Bedford Tigers in the third round and they may well want to rotate their squad and feature some of those former Salford loanees, which is a likely explanation for why Mike Grady is without that quartet.

Salford have managed to make a loan signing this week though with Deacon Connolly arriving from Widnes Vikings and he’s set to feature alongside fellow Widnes loanee Toby Hughes, who played in the halves last week against Oldham.

Star signing Brad Dwyer is featured once again as well as former Salford players Sam Hill, Josh Wagstaffe, Bardyel Wells and Fin Yates.

Ex-Hull FC man Owen Haldenby is also named and could be in line for a debut after not featuring last week against the Roughyeds.

Salford will travel to Chiswick to take on Hammersmith with kick-off for that game confirmed to be 6:00pm on Saturday. Should they win, they will host Hull FC in the third round of the competition.
