Salford Red Devils have confirmed they have secured the immediate future of one of their standout players, with plans to extend a deal further.
It’s been a torrid season for Salford but one of the shining lights, at least in the last two weeks, has been the emergence of Declan Murphy.
Fans were surprised to see him named in their squad with very few knowing anything about the 20-year-old but they’ve quickly come to appreciate what an immense and exciting talent he is.
Murphy was first named to the team in the clash with Castleford Tigers earlier this month with most fans curious as to who the number 57 named on the bench was. By the end of the game, a first win in months, fans were demanding to know who Murphy was after his standout performance.
The 20-year-old arrived on trial from Saracens with the full-back’s career so far based in rugby sevens, however, he’s made an immediate impact in the 13-man game and that’s why Salford Red Devils have moved fast.

Salford have confirmed that they’ve tied down Murphy until the end of the current season, ending his trial and making him a permanent squad member.
More positive for Red Devils fans is the fact the club have confirmed that talks are ongoing about a longer deal, beyond the end of the current season.
Having joined Salford initially and played for their reserves, he was thrust into the action against Castleford and that saw him retain his place for the game against Leeds.
Paul Rowley previously explained that Murphy had done a “little spell at Wigan” and more recently joked that he wished to keep the electric full-back a secret.
The club have now secured his immediate future, a statement announcing: “We are delighted to confirm Declan Murphy has signed a deal to remain at the Reds for the rest of 2025, with discussions ongoing regarding a longer-term agreement.”
Speaking on his time in rugby league so far, Murphy said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time at Salford so far. From the moment I walked through the doors, the players, coaches and staff made me feel so welcome and allowed me to develop my game.
“I’m looking forward to the rest of the year and playing some good rugby with the boys – a big thank you to the fans for all their backing since I’ve arrived!”
