Salford Red Devils have made their fifth and sixth loan signings of the day as the club’s bid to survive continues.
In what has been the worst week yet of the Salford saga with four first-team players leaving to join other clubs, including captain Ryan Brierley, the Red Devils have been scrambling to secure players in order to field a team to face Hull FC on Sunday.
Whilst it’s of huge importance for Salford to field a team and fulfill the fixture so that they avoid any further RFL punishment, it’s also imperative for all of Super League that the Red Devils complete not only this fixture, but all of their remaining seven.
Failure to do so would see Super League in breach of their contract with broadcasters Sky Sports, to whom they’re obligated to provide six games every week. Salford collapsing or being unable to field a team, which they have looked on the verge of this week, would negate that.
That goes some way to explain why Leeds Rhinos, St Helens, and now Wigan Warriors have all loaned the Red Devils two players.

It’s no surprise that the three clubs with the biggest academy set-ups have been able to wade in and offer players and following the signings of Riley Lumb, Ben Littelwood, Ciaran Nolan and Jake Burns, Salford have now added Harvey Makin and Taylor Kerr.
The pair of Wigan Warriors props are the fifth and sixth short-term loanees ahead of Sunday’s trip to the MKM Stadium with the team expected to be made up almost entirely of loanees and academy players.
Makin returns for a second spell at Salford, having made five appearances between April and May, whilst Kerr is still yet to make his Super League debut for Wigan.
Announcing their signings, Salford announced: “We can confirm prop forward, Harvey Makin has returned to the Reds on loan from Wigan Warriors, alongside teammate, Taylor Kerr.”
On Makin’s earlier stint at the club, they said: “During that time, the youngster added some energy and toughness to our forward pack and will aim to do the same this time around.”
As for Kerr, they explained: “Kerr is a young, hungry forward who has been around the Warriors first-grade squad this season and enjoyed representational honours with Lancashire.”
