Salford Red Devils setback as loanee recalled and sent to Championship contenders

Salford Red Devils

Warrington Wolves have recalled Tom Whitehead from Salford Red Devils in order to send the youngster on loan to Oldham. Whitehead has joined the Championship side for the remainder of the season and the hope will be that he can pick up some valuable game time.

Whitehead had been on loan with the Red Devils over the last few months and played his sixth game for the club last weekend as Paul Rowley’s side were thumped 80-6. That will be the back-rower’s last game for the Super League club though with Wire recalling him to move out to Oldham.

The Championship side are fourth at present, four points below the current top two pace, but having signed Ryan Brierley and Jack Ormondroyd last week, they’ll be feeling confident heading into the play-offs.

Whitehead will look to bolster that push for silverware and the 22-year-old is keen to make a difference.

Salford Red Devils loan man recalled to join Oldham

“I’m really excited, Oldham are doing really well at the minute and I just want to be a part of it with my hometown club,” Whitehead told Roughyeds TV.

“I’m from Saddleworth so I’m only a 10-15 minute drive away and I am a local boy. I know a few of the lads here already from Warrington and other clubs I have played at so this week has felt easier and I feel welcome.

“I’ve been at Salford and it is a tough situation they are going through but I enjoyed my time there. It felt like the right time for me to be recalled and to come here.

“What Oldham are doing is really good, they are on the ascend and I am excited to be a part of that”.

On the club’s latest recruit, head coach Sean Long said: “He is a lock forward who can play back row. He has a really good skill set and is only young. I think he will be a good addition to our side for the rest of the season and provides cover for Adam Milner, Lewis Baxter and Pat Moran.”

According to reports elsewhere, Whitehead is due to make the move to Hull KR in the off-season.
