Salford Red Devils confirm another exit as winger signs for Championship club

Salford Red Devils have confirmed yet another exit with a Championship club signing one of their few remaining stars.

There have been a steady flow of exits all season long at Salford as the club tried to bring their squad costs down but the debts have continued to mount and that’s resulted in them facing a HMRC winding up petition.

Somehow, that has been adjourned multiple times with Wednesday’s hearing leading to another two-week adjournment over their mounting debts, casting further doubt on the club’s viability to function in 2026.

A statement from the owners then announced that money to pay off those debts had been “formally secured” and would arrive inside 12 days, however, their track record on delivering money has been poor to say the least.

Regardless of that slim hope the club will pull through, the exodus of players has continued with winger Nathan Connell the latest to leave Salford Red Devils.

Salford Red Devils winger signs with Widnes Vikings

Connell’s exit follows the likes of Loghan Lewis, however, the winger hasn’t found a Super League club with Widnes Vikings instead his next destination.

Widnes have made him their sixth signing for 2026 with the winger penning a one-year deal at the DCBL Stadium. The 22-year-old arrives off the back of 23 Salford appearances, almost all of which were made in 2025.

Speaking as part of his Vikings announcement, he said: “I’m buzzing to be here. It’s great to have got the deal over the line, and I’m excited for a fresh start at the Vikings.

“I’m hoping to bring plenty of skill to the squad this year. I might not be the biggest, but I’ll always give 100% for the team, coaching staff, and fans.

“I ended up playing a lot more than I thought I would at Salford last year. It’s obviously a big step up playing in Super League. I know the Championship is a very physical competition, so having that Super League experience will definitely help me kick on this year.”

Salford also confirmed his exit and the 22-year-old sent a message to the Red Devils fans, stating: “I want to say a big thank you to the coaches and staff for giving me this opportunity to live my childhood dream.

“Despite the year we had, I’m glad I was able to play alongside the lads I did. I’ve made friends and memories for life and wish them all the best for their future.

“To the fans, thank you for continuing to make it special to pull on the Salford shirt and play in front you of you despite the difficult circumstances. I’ll always be grateful for my time at Salford.”
