Salford Red Devils coach calls for disciplinary to use ‘game sense’ after Joe Shorrocks’ ban

Salford Red Devils coach Krisnan Inu has reacted to the news of Joe Shorrocks being handed a one-game ban by the disciplinary panel, insisting that ‘game sense’ and ‘genuine knowledge’ must be used when making those decisions.

Instead, he’s pointed to technicalities in an ever-changing rulebook as he outlined his verdict on the ban that was handed down to the utility forward.

Shorrocks was only handed a Grade A charge for the late contact, however, he already had 10 penalty points on his record on account of his Grade D dangerous contact charge against Brodie Croft from earlier in the year.

As such, the one penalty point earned immediately triggered a ban and leaves him just one charge away from another two-game ban.

Salford assistant coach Krisnan Inu was asked for his thoughts on the ban, with the former Red Devils player calling for a change in how things are interpreted.

He explained: “I think technicalities sort of take away a bit of game sense and just a bit of genuine knowledge of the game.”

Shorrocks was penalised at the time for the late tackle on Aidan Sezer with the Hull FC captain taking exception to the treatment, however, Inu doesn’t believe it was late.

Putting himself in Shorrocks’ shoes, Inu said: “This is my view, if I feel like I can pull out but I still tackle him, then sweet, that’s a late shot, all day. But once you’re already in the motion of the tackle and there’s literally not even half a second to make a decision, it’s impossible, so that’s how I see it.

“I think late and dangerous are two different things, so I think we’ve got to determine every tackle specifically to the action, not put everything under one bubble.

“Obviously that was deemed late, which, like I said, I don’t agree.”

The Salford coach also pointed to the fact that the rules around contact change regularly with referees seeming to focus on different elements each year.

Inu argued: “The game changes every year. We get given certain rules that they’ll crack down on certain things and then the year after it’ll be something else, so I think we just need to be consistent everywhere along the board and just follow the rulebook.

“We get taught the rules, so we’ve got to read it. I think everyone’s got to be accountable at some point. I know if I’m wrong, I’ll be the first one to put my hand up and say sorry to the fourth official and whatnot, but I’ll definitely be the first to voice my opinion when it comes to our team and things that I don’t agree with.”

Shorrocks will miss Sunday’s trip to face St Helens on account of his ban.
