Salford Red Devils confirm resignation of key man as saga continues

Salford Red Devils have confirmed that club Chief Executive Officer Chris Irwin has resigned from his role in another blow for the club.

The Red Devils have been in turmoil financially but Irwin was among those who joined when new ownership took over in February, however, the financial situation at Salford has not improved.

Despite an initial statement from the ownership stating that all debts had been cleared, the club remain in debt with money just ‘trickling in’.

That has seen wages paid late on two occasions whilst the club also remain under special measures meaning that they are under a restricted salary cap as well.

Cost-cutting measures such as the sale of players has seen them come below the £1.2 million salary cap but issues still remain, and the resignation of Irwin points to more problems on the horizon.

A brief statement from Salford confirmed Irwin’s exit, reading: “We can confirm Chris Irwin’s departure as CEO from Salford Red Devils, after accepting his resignation.

“We thank him for his efforts. The journey continues – Reds Rise Together.”

Irwin had previously worked at the club but had joined Exeter Football Club, whom he left to return to Salford but just four months after his return, he has now departed.

The Red Devils have the week off as the Challenge Cup semi-finals take place but it’s unclear in what state Salford will be when they play their next Super League game, scheduled for Sunday, May 18th against Castleford Tigers.

They fell to a 54-0 defeat at Super League Magic Weekend against Hull KR with the new owners reportedly in attendance at St James Park.

They should be expelled from the Super League with immediate effect as they don’t respect the minimum salary cap. They’re not even a professional club with less than £1.2 million wages…
