An appeal has been launched by West Yorkshire Police following a break-in at the Rob Burrow Centre for MND at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds.
The plea follows a report of two burglaries taking place last week, on Wednesday 14 and Friday 16 May.
A rucksack and tools were located at the scene on Friday, whilst the only thing known to be stolen is a large quantity of copper from the attempted break-in on Wednesday.
Craige Richardson, Director of Estates and Facilities at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, said via the BBC: “We will always take positive action against criminal activity at our hospitals, including prosecution.
Construction of the Centre started in the middle of last year, after £6.8 million was raised to build the new facility.
Richardson added: “The new state-of-the-art Centre will provide a calm and peaceful environment for patients living with MND and their families. We remain on track to open in summer 2025.”
Burglary at MND Centre named after Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow
Leeds Rhinos icon Rob Burrow was diagnosed with the disease in December 2019 and battled fiercely until his death in July 2024. His legacy will live on throughout the Centre, as more research, time and effort go into fighting this currently incurable disease.
The appeal from West Yorkshire Police reads in full: “Police are investigating two burglaries at the construction site of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds.
A call was received at 11:37pm on Friday (16 May) reporting an ongoing burglary at the construction site. Officers attended and searched the area where items including tools and a rucksack were located and seized.
Further enquiries have established that a burglary also took place at the site in the early hours of Wednesday morning last week (14/5) in which a quantity of copper was stolen.
The Leeds East Neighbourhood Policing Team is appealing for anyone with information about the incidents or anyone who has seen or heard anything that could assist the ongoing investigation to West Yorkshire Police by calling 101 or go online at here quoting reference 13250276040.
Alternatively, call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Inspector Carl Robinson said: “We are actively pursuing lines of inquiry in relation to these burglaries, which have quite understandably struck a chord with people in the community.
“I would urge anyone with information about either incident to contact us.”

It takes a special kind of lowlife vermin to commit a crime like this. Punishment is a waste of time, they should be conscripted into the Russian Army and sent to the frontlines where their sorry, pathetic, miserable lives will come to a terrifying end after a period of insane brutality. They would serve no purpose other than to fertilise the earth with their blood! Stealing from the sick, the disabled, the vulnerable is beyond despicable. If caught they need to be named, shamed, and excluded from society. If it’s for drugs, then give them the drugs, a bucket full of, pure uncut suplly, and let them, let them remove themselves from our misery of their existence.
